May 10, 2011

We awoke to cloudy skies and 77 degrees. The sun was shining by the first gas stop. We had a later-than-usual departure as the time change allowed us to gain another hour on our trek West. We met “Cowboy” (Roger Mead) and his wife Karen, as well as “Casper” from Kansas and his cousin in El Paso for lunch.  We had fun. We then rode on to Las Cruces, NM. We visited the largest Harley Davidson dealer in the world - Barnetts.  Some of us bought tee shirts and other items.  We learned that NM was closing the Interstate due to extremely high winds and blowing sand. We elected to stop for the day in Las Cruces. The Harley shop gave us a reduced rate at a local motel and we checked in about 4:00PM.  Some of us rode our bikes downtown to dine and some elected to have pizza delivered to the room rather than ride again in the wind.  We did laundry and hit the hay early as we’ll have a longer day tomorrow.  We learned that gas stops are few and far between in West TX as we’d ride many miles without passing a single structure. We altered our itinerary due to today’s stop. We hope to make it to Gila Bend, AZ tomorrow and then the next day make San Diego as planned.
Today we passed a man who is rollerblading across the US carrying an American flag to remind people of our military. He was rollerblading on the service road as we passed. Another person on a mission to bring honor to those who teach us that Freedom is Not Free.
