We had breakfast in the hotel in San Antonio this morning with several active duty military (AF, Army, & Navy) who were there for training. We met a Special Forces guy stationed in DC but from Hampton, VA. They were good to talk to.
We came out of SA fine even with the fairly heavy traffic. It was overcast and 77 degrees when we left. At each gas stop the prices increased. Last stop was $4.35 for 93 octane. Like the gas prices, the temperature increased as well. When we reached Ft Stockton, TX, the thermometer on my bike showed 103 degrees, and we haven’t reached the hot part of our journey yet!
We checked into the Days Inn in early afternoon. Some of us went to the outdoor pool (cold!) and some spent time on the computer, phone, etc. We walked to two restaurants nearby recommended by the clerk, only to find them closed. So we had a wonderful dinner at McDonald’s.
Today, the riders talked about dropping troops into the jungles of VietNam at night from 500 ft altitude, how tough and dependable “Rock” Marines are, and how many times they saw a General jump from the airplanes to lead his troops into combat. The tales gave a new appreciation for how hard the jobs these guys did really were. There was also discussion about the different weapons used by the different military branches.
Tomorrow we ride to El Paso to have lunch with Cowboy and Karen. Then we ride on to Lordsburg, NM where we’ll spend the night. Let’s hope the heat’s not too bad.

Hey Trent, the gas is DOWN to $3.63 here in Wytheville. I hope you told all those Texans to "DRILL BABY DRILL"!!!
