We left Wytheville this morning at 7:00 AM in 36 degree sunshine. Bob Atwell led us, Jim Watt and I followed joined by Gary & Darlene Jackson from Abingdon. We met Carl Hinkle in Statesville, NC where we gassed up and ate breakfast. We stopped for gas about every 100 miles, ate lunch just south of Atlanta and made it to the Sleep Inn at Exit 51 in Auburn, AL just before 6:00 PM. My cousin and her daughter met me, gave me a tour of Auburn University and downtown Auburn and then we all ate dinner at Ruby Tuesdays. Some good stories were shared, some laughs, and a few tears (it starts early). It was good to hear my second cousin (who finished her last college exam today) and her Mom hear what RFTW is really about. They heard the stories of Viet Nam vets being mistreated upon their return, of being asked not to wear the uniform in certain establishments, etc. But they also heard about the healing, the love, the understanding and acceptance that is so much a part of The Run. All from some men who know it all first hand, all in all a wonderful beginning to this mission. Tomorrow we ride early and hope to make it to New Orleans. The journey continues.
